At Ruangguru, we believe in creating impact through our projects. As an ed-tech company, it’s no wonder that our main focus lies in education, especially in Indonesia. We understand the challenges experienced by our teachers, students, and community members. This need for a solution motivates us to focus on socially impactful projects, all with the same goal of advancing education in Indonesia.

This Youth Pledge Day, with the spirit of nationalism and unity fresh in our hearts, let’s take a look at how Ruangguru’s youth show their commitment to Indonesia through various social initiatives.

Meet our Impact Team!

Impact Team is the foundation arm of Ruangguru with the purpose of delivering social education-focused programs across Indonesia. The team consists of 68 Indonesian youths carrying the same goal of achieving inclusive and quality education for all.

Ruangguru’s Impact Team focuses on four main pillars:

  • Teacher training program to improve capacity and capability
  • Learning support for students’ improvement
  • Work-readiness program aiming to tackle youth unemployment
  • Content development and advocacy on emerging social issues

Mentoring and developing Indonesian teachers

Teachers play an important role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow. Through the Indonesia Teaching Fellowship (ITF) we cultivate competent, well-rounded teachers capable of educating Indonesian students to reach their full potential.

The ITF initiative was especially necessary at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, as the shift to distance learning was quite sudden and a lot of teachers weren’t yet accustomed to it. Aside from technological skills, we also support teachers’ pedagogical competence, professional comprehension of every school subject, and social competence.

ITF was well-received in 2020, reaching hundreds of teachers in 14 districts across 11 provinces of Indonesia. Teachers who participated stated a more than 30% increase in competency scores. Overall, this program received an average satisfaction rate of 9.0 out of 10.

Improving the learning experience of underprivileged students

One of the challenges in Indonesian education comes from the nation’s geography as a broad archipelago. Seeing this, we launched the Indonesia Learning Fellowship, a learning support program specifically for Indonesian students living in remote areas with limited access to education and technology. Beneficiaries from primary school to high school level would receive free access to Ruangguru products, tutors, and webinar sessions for a year. ILF helps them to prepare for school examinations, national examinations, and university entrance examinations.

In 2020, over five thousand students in 200 districts across 29 provinces were granted the fellowship. Students reported more than 40% increase in academic scores based on tryout sessions and 97% of students claimed that the program has helped them prepare for the national examination and university admission test.

Empowering young people to tackle youth unemployment

We also implemented a work preparation program, providing intensive mentoring to improve work readiness and career development for disadvantaged youths. Participants receive guidance on building a CV, access to job opportunities, webinars, counseling, skill training, and job interview preparations.

Last year, over 16.000 people participated in this training program. From that number, 28% of participants who were previously unemployed stated that they had secured a job and 32% among those who already had a job stated that their income had increased 3 months post-program.

All of these initiatives from Ruangguru are organized for the betterment of Indonesia. Overall, we have seen great success from these programs and are currently continuing to carry them out in 2021 and onwards. “We are always excited to become part of the solution in tackling one of the biggest challenges the world is facing, the gap in education. Being able to see firsthand the impact of the programs we delivered, especially for students and teachers living in some of the most remote areas, keeps the team motivated to always implement, evaluate and improve our initiatives. We hope that more people are willing to invest in the future of education, together with Ruangguru.” -Melania Niken Larasati, Impact Manager Ruangguru
